A pedestrian activated crossing beacon called a Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (RRFB) has been a revolutionary product that is taking North America by storm. The bright LEDs and distinct flash pattern gets drivers to stop for pedestrians like never before. If this technology was implemented at pedestrian crossings with enforcement support it can save lives. This is my recommendation.
Here is a video on how they work: http://carmanah.com/traffic/crosswalk-education-center
Tom, thanks for sharing this! My son studies in Virginia (UVA) and I know these installations from the university campus. Indeed, very catchy and for sure they stop oncoming motorists at pedestrian crossings.
